This year’s seminar programme takes place from Monday through to Friday. To attend seminars at BUFF, you need accreditation. Sometimes, you must also pre-register – read more under the respective programme item.

Monday

Barn filmar Malmö

Language: Swedish  Pre-register by emailing: per.dahlbeck@malmo.se  Free to attend, limited number of spaces.   Det är vår stad is a feature length documentary about Malmö entirely shot by pre-school children. On March 11 the City of Malmö hosts a special screening of the film followed by a panel discussion reflecting on the work with the film.    The children behind Det är vår stad are aged two to six and come from 21 different pre-schools in Malmö. Seventy-eight educators have led the work with the film.    The children were tasked with documenting their pre-schools, their surroundings and their city using a film camera. When children hold the camera it becomes possible to see the world through their eyes and their actual perspective.   The goal has been to strengthen the children’s ability to form opinions and exercise the freedom of expression, in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).    After a special screening of the film it will be discussed from three perspectives: educational, societal and artistic.    Det är vår stad is produced by Film Fatale AB in collaboration with Swedish Ecstasy Film and the City of Malmö. The project is supported by Atea Sverige AB, BID Möllevången Sofielund, Reggio Emilia Institutet, Region Skåne and the Swedish Film Institute.   

BUFF-podden

Language: Swedish Accreditation required. BUFF’s own podcast BUFFpodden saw the light of day in May 2022. With Swedish podcast Nordegren & Epstein as the inspiration, Julia Jarl and Daniel Lundquist have regular conversations about films and series. The aim is to fill a gap in the pod scape and highlight the moving image from a new perspective. In this year’s live pod they share their best unexpected meetings with celebrities.

Film in school day: Film for change and the power of storytelling

Our guest of honour is Nicolas Lunabba, whose debut novel Blir du ledsen om jag dör? has been praised for humanising young people who are pulled into violence and crime. We get to learn the conversation methodology ”Tala film – Tala Liv”.  We get to meet filmmakers whose films can spark conversation and inspire us to tell our own stories.  We get a crash course in filmmaking with your students.   Licensing and services – all you need to know to make film with your students  Annelie Medoc, ICT strategist at Lund’s municipality shares her best tips.    Documentary film and storytelling Lisa Nyed, Commissioning Editor Documentary Film at Film i Skåne, in conversation with filmmakers Niklas Gyberg Ivarsson (Jävla Pappa, 2023) and  samt Anders Skovbjerg Jepsen (En tyst berättelse, 2023).   Work in progress – Rosa Rugosa  Ludvig Rodman, Commissioning Editor Short Fiction Film at Film i Skåne interview the director Stella Rydholm Thal.  The way to finding a language – a conversation with Nicolas Lunabba Fatima Khayari from the Swedish Film Institute speaks with Nicolas about how literature and film gave him a language and opened doors into worlds far way from his own – maybe even a way out of a marginalised and vulnerable position. We shine a light on having no language and violence, and reflect upon how school, sport and culture can work as an antidote to a way into crime.  Workshop 13:00 – Panora 2 Workshop ”Tala Film – Tala Liv” Folkets Bio Filmpedagogerna Non-profit organisation Folkets Bio Filmpedagogerna has worked with film and media education for more than 20 years. Filmpedagogerna will present the interview methodology Tala film – Tala liv. The goal of the methodology is to capture the participants’ individual experiences. During this training session you get to participate in a conversation about film as well as get tips on what to think about when leading such a conversation yourself.

And the King Said, What a Fantastic Machine + interactive labb

14:15-15:00 – After the film directors Axel Danielson and Maximilien Van Aertryck from Plattform Produktion lead a workshop around how we can understand the information society and our media habits. With the help of images and text, perspectives are turned into new insights in the Panora foyer. 

Gränsland

Held in Swedish Free entry Gränsland is a concept by the Church of Sweden that discusses existential questions rooted in culture. With: BUFF’s programme director Daniel Lundquist, confirmation consultant Charlotta Ortiz, the film’s lead actor Desirée Mwepu, and Helena Myrstener, priest.   Is it possible to meet and party when the invisible boundaries of neighbourhoods and the racialization of the majority society separate people? What happens when Fardosa and her group go to a house party in a leafy part of town where they meet other people of the same age and from the same city?

Christiane F. + talk with Natja Brunckhorst

  Accreditation or ticket required The 1981 cult film Vi barn från Bahnhof Zoo (Christiane F. – Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo) took the world by storm and spawned a TV series of the same name in 2021. We are delighted to screen this generational film, followed by a talk with the lead actor, Natja Brunckhorst. Take the opportunity to relive one of the 1980’s most iconic films on the big screen.

Kids Media

Accreditation required Language: English Pause with coffee and cake.  Moderator: Frej Bergstrand What drives a scriptwriter, what does the future look like for children’s media and what stories engage a young audience? Those are a few of the topics we delve into at this year’s Kids Media. See you on March 14!  Kids Media aims to inspire creators and producers working with children’s media and focuses on content for children and young people. A recurring item on the programme in which we get to see films that are still in production. What about the child actors?

On set, he wanted to please and pretended to understand what the adults were saying. This was in the early 1990’s. Do child actors of today have the same experience today or has it become easier? Listen to Gabriel, Christian Zetterberg, director and former child actor, Ted Kjellsson, director and Karen Helene Haugaard, director and governess on the set of Tunna Blå linjen, talk about child actors from different perspectives. Industry afternoon

Accreditation required Language: English Friday’s seminar programme at Spegeln cinema ends with short and exciting presentations. This year we do a deep-dive into scripts, new concepts and explore the future of Nordic children’s and youth film.   Northern Script With: Torbjörn Jansson, scriptwriter and mentor. Matilde Graf, participant Northern Scripts Northern Script is a creative event where budding scriptwriters aged 18 to 29 get help with developing their scripts. One mentor from each of the Nordic countries coaches the scriptwriters before choosing and inviting select participants to an exclusive workshop in Oulu, Finland. Meet Torbjörn Jansson, mentor for the Swedish and Norwegian participants in 2023, and Matilde Graf, the 2023 Swedish participant in Oulu.     Film i Sörmland’s scriptwriters’ residency With: Aland Mohammed, EliSophie Andrée & Daniel Lundquist. With a focus on children’s films, Film i Sörmland gives one scriptwriter the change to develop his or hers script together with playwright EliSophie Andrée. This year’s resident scriptwriter is Aland Mohammed. He has studied scriptwriting for film and TV at Dalarna University. His film Blattesvensk is a fast, crazy and wonderful youth comedy that fills a void within Swedish film. A future Swedish ”Superbad”.    The NoJse report With: Mariella Harpelunde Jensen Mariella Harpelunde Jensen, programme director at BUSTER Film Festival and chairperson of NoJse, presents and hosts a talk around Nordic Think Tank – a recurring event at BUSTER where professionals from the Nordic film industry exchange thoughts. The report from Nordic Think Tank is presented at the Berlinale, this year also at BUFF.    Spellbound With: Torbjörn Jansson   A film story is created jointly and in real time during a playful meeting between a young audience and established filmmakers. Torbjörn Jansson presents Trollbundet: a development concept with a magical children’s perspective, which premiered at Barnefilmfestivalen in Kristiansand, Norway, 2023. In the hot seat: Children’s and youth film commissioner Janne Vierth With: Janne Vierth, Malena Jansson What is the state of Swedish children’s and youth film? Where is it heading? Shouldn’t there be more and better films made for a young audience? We put the Swedish Film Institute’s film commissioner for children and young people against the wall and demand straight answers.
