In Chaplin’s last silent film – though it is full of sound effects and specially composed music – a little tramp fights to survive during the Great Depression. He tries to work on an assembly line, as a night watchman in a department store and as a singing waiter but keeps getting into trouble. A string of classic scenes and a clear passion for social justice meant this film has qualified, in a multitude of lists, as one the world’s best films of all time. MJ
